Adam mirror George III, dated 1780
A refined example of the Adam school, this George III mirror (1780) combines restrained neoclassical ornament with superb original materials. The giltwood frame retains its original gilding, showing the warm, mellow patina expected of late 18th-century finish. The mirror glass is also original, with subtle age-related foxing and faint waviness that authenticate its period and lend depth to reflections.
Design notes
Neoclassical motifs in the Adam manner: delicate mouldings, symmetrical composition, and an emphasis on proportion and line rather than heavy ornament.
Original gilt surface: well-preserved, with areas of tasteful loss and restoration consistent with conservation rather than overcleaning.
Original mercury-backed glass: appropriate silvering wear and small imperfections that confirm age and enhance character.
Comparative reference Also see the neo-classic mirror by John Linnell, c. 1770, for close stylistic parallels in scale, proportion, and the use of refined gilt ornament. Both makers reflect the late Georgian embrace of classical restraint and elegant detail.
